Reflections - Action Research

Action research allows leaders to focus from the inside out, versus the outside-in as in traditional research. The act of inquiry forces the leader to question the status quo and look critically at what is working and what is not. As stated in Leading with Passion and Knowledge (Dana, 2009), it may not be comfortable to look at your own work or your group with such a critical eye. In the end it action research allows one to focus in on what is not working and develop strategies to improve. In some instances to view success and see what can be utilized in other projects or issues that you may be contemplating or reflecting on. Simply put, action research allows you to look at the issues, determine how they can be corrected, implement the improvement and start the cycle over again so that processes can continually improve.

Starting the cycle again later is one aspect that I haven't seen yet. It is very possible that this would be key to do in both success and failure from an action research plan. Complex projects will not always be a one-and-one scenario.

That is simply put. The Dana text explains action research as a spiraling cycle. It is much easier to understand the way you explain it is a process that restarts. In fact I think might try to use the class action research project as a process that I complete with several other requirements, like assessment.
